CSR? Responsibility or Hidden Truth?

So many company are now venture into Corporate Social Responsibility and sustainability businesses or some call it triple bottom line... We are truly happy to see more and more company are willing to set a side portion of the company profit for the development and sustainability or their own businesses and bringing goodness to the society as the whole...

The question that normally people are asking is how since is the corporate social responsibility? For company which potrait bad image from their business, how far can CSR potrait them as good company? WHy would a company do something that might bring harm to their own company?

Weird is the truth...truth is the weirdest part....Why would British America Tabacco encouraging youngster not to smoke? Why would Genting try to reduce gambling addiction among the customer? JTI also had try to urge people to know the different between smoking legally and health...

Bottom line for this, I would believe they want to be view as good company, try to inform the public that even they are in business that might cause danger or addiction, the company are itself clean and legal...

BAT open its business as there is demand for cigarette and their aim is to make money out of it...They didn't force people to smoke, but people itself who wanted to smoke. Genting open its door with casino. They didn't force people to go in to gamble but yet people are going in...

Business is tough...Main reason for company to exist is to have profit...mean survival beside capital is the revenue and income is enough to cover all expenses....So if the company is to fork out big portion of money for Corporate Social responsibility, that will affect the profitability of the company and reduce the return on investment....Thus, shareholder unhappy....

However world change and now people are looking on stakeholder more than shareholder...Everyone is sstakeholder....creditor, debtor, bankers, government, consumer, public, and sometime arguable the animal itself...Earliest 90's, the green peace and other NGO had actively come out and shouting for greener business and more environment friendly businesses...Talking about animal as stakeholder, there is once KFC in US been boycott for animal torturing. It was said, that KFC is accountable for chicken that they are the stakeholder of the company...Sadly to said, now we have to wider our perception of stakeholder as to anyone or anythings that is affected by the company decision...

On the same time, an ethical and "good" company is proven to project "healthier" income to the company. So what you think? Did CSR and triple bottom line improve business in term of reputation and profitability? A good question....I do believe there is a point why ACCA are so keen in promoting the CSR and even the new requirement by the regulatory board in making a mandatory for all public listed to list down the CSR activities that hey have done...

CSR...Corporate Social Responsibility....The new age of business...

CSR can be in any field so American Tobacco could plant more trees, or provide housing to the needy. Their CSR does not make them talk about health and ill effects of smoking. So CSR does not really conflict with their business, but it makes their business more sustainable.
